Poems on the Book of Daniel by Rex H. Henderson

The Golden Image

Daniel interpreted the first dream
Which revealed the collapse of the
Babylonian empire, Nebuchadnezzar
Said, Surely your God is the God of gods.

Displeased he built a magnificent
Golden statue representing his will
For the future. It was his way of
Defying God with his self-will.

I will not allow the God of Daniel
To set my kingdom aside. My rule
Will endure.
Whose god is God?
Who rules history? Is it my rule?

When the people heard the pagan
Music, out of fear and secular
Attitude, the people fell down and
Worshipped the golden image.

When it comes time to worship God,
It is not time for a piano recital,
Nor time to show off a voice, and
God forbid the showmanship.
