Poems on the Book of Daniel by Rex H. Henderson

 The Storm Breaks

Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego
Were faithful troopers to their God
Through the Chaldean training course
And then the storm broke.

The Instructors notified the king
That the these Hebrews defied
The king’s orders and worshipped
Their own God; the idol was denied.

The angry king issued an ultimatum.
Either recant and worship the image,
Or be thrown into the fiery furnace,
As you hear the music of our age.

Nebuchadnezzar had been established
By God, but it didn’t make him God
With unlimited power. He is responsible
To divine sovereignty, the only God.

When pressured does a Christian bow
To the State, or obey the Bible
In obedience to God? Doing the right
Thing is always costly and libel.

O Nebuchadnezzar, we need not defend
Ourselves before  you…We want you
To know…that we will not serve your
Gods, or worship the image of gold.
