 PSALM 124

If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say; If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, when men rose up against us: Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul: Then the proud waters had gone over our soul. Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth. Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped. Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.  (Psalm 124, KJV)

Psalm 124

What If?

If is a condition, a supposition.
What would have happened, if God
Had not intervened? This writer
Wants to praise God with honor.

Notice the power of six images.

1.      “An animal swallowing its prey

2.      A  flood submerging its victims,

3.      A torrent rushing over everything,

4.      Waters sweeping everything before them,

5.      An animal grinding its prey,

6.      A bird entangled in a trap.”

These images only express external
Troubles, but what a about sin and its
Punishment, If Jesus had not died
In our place?  Thank God he did.

He has made earth, his domain where
The snare lies. He has made the heavens
For soaring wings that souls may fly
From their prison into heaven’s glory.

Jesus came down to earth to break the
Snare, and returned to heaven that
We might fly “as the doves to their
Window.”
O glory! I shall fly away.

“Some glad morning when this life is o’er.
             I’ll fly away;
To a home on God’s celestial shore
Hallelujah, by and by I’ll fly away.
