God at Work in Two New
Mission Starts in Honduras

In 2003 Ann and I took a medical dental evangelism team to Zapotillo, Honduras. It had been twenty years since a medical team had visited this country town. The cooperation of the community was excellent and the team had a strong evangelistic impact.

In January 2005 while I was teaching a seminary extension course at Alpha and Omega Baptist Church in Danli, Honduras, Juan Alberto Herrera and I made a visit to two school teachers who worked closely with them at the medical dental campaign. They sat on their front porch and said, “We want a Baptist church here in Zapotillo that preaches the same message you preached when you were here with the medical team.”

I challenged my seminary extension students in Danli to pray about starting a new work in Zapotillo. Juan Alberto went and showed gospel films in the towns with an excellent response. A few months later Saul and Edith Servillon moved back to their home in Zapotillo. They have over twenty years of experience pastoring Baptist churches. They accepted the challenge of starting a mission under the authority of Alpha and Omega Baptist Church.

In November 2006 the mission had 28 adults and 55 children attending. The group was meeting in a rented mud wall house and later they were bounced from one place to another.  “I sensed the Lord leading me to purchase a piece of property for the mission, and went back to Danli later in the day and called Ann in the U. S.”  She quickly responded in a positive manner and shared the prayer request with our daughters. A friend had given a thousand dollars before I left for Honduras and said to use it as the Lord leads. In twenty four hours the Lord had provided the $3,000 to purchase the property.

That next day I went to the Las Cascias subdivision in Danli where one of our students has seven home Bible studies meeting weekly. They do not have a sufficiently large enough place for everyone to meet together. Again I sensed the Lord leading me to step out by faith and purchase another piece of property. By the time I returned home, the Lord had laid it on individual believers’ hearts in the States to provide through Abide in Christ. In January the two pieces of property were purchased for Alpha and Omega Baptist Church.

We continued to pray and seek the Lord’s direction for the missions. Each time I preached I asked congregations to pray for two construction teams and two evangelism teams to go and work in Honduras.

In the summer to 2007, the Holy Spirit laid on the heart of two couples to provide the funds for one of the missions. They shared with their pastor the desire of their hearts. On September 9th their pastor called. “Brother Wil, I wanted to let you know that God has led two couples to provide $10,000 to build one of the missions in Honduras.” Then you could hear him holding back the emotions as he cleared his voice. “Furthermore, the deacons in our church said they don’t want to be left out in what they sense God is doing. They voted to ask our church to provide the other $10,000 for the second mission! That was the vote of our church tonight.”  Ann and I looked at each other and said, “I saw God do it!”

I returned to Danli, Honduras, September 15-25 to begin making plans for construction of the churches, and taught two courses to pastors and church leaders. I also held services at Las Cascias and Zapotillo and baptized four men in the penitentiary. I conducted a three day evangelism workshop in Ocotal, Nicaragua.

After returning to the U. S. Ronnie Norris, the team captain for the Arkansas Medical Dental Evangelism team and I were discussing how the Lord was working in the missions. I said we desperately need a medical team to return to Zapotillo and help our evangelism program. The next day we got word that the team could go to Zapotillo in January.

A couple of days later at the Delta Baptist Association annual meeting, a pastor asked how we were doing on putting together a construction team. He said his church has built six churches in Guatemala and that he had men in his church who would be interested in building the churches. With the current high inflation in Honduras, we realized we still needed $5000 more for each church.

Sunday, September 14, Juan Alberto and I spoke at two Baptist churches in Mississippi. At a deacon’s meeting at one of the churches where we spoke, they voted to ask the church to raise the $10,000 needed to complete the missions! The other church has men interested in going and constructing the cinder block walls for these two churches.

Pray that the Holy Spirit will continue to move over the hearts of these individuals and churches to bring all of these needs together at His perfect timing.

Praise the Lord with us for His faithfulness and timely provisions.

And thank the Lord for calling upon His people whom He knew would respond to His calling.

The walls were constructed for the two missions January 1-2, 2008. A medical-dental-evangelism team ministered in Zapotillo January 13-17. Seminary extension students worked at discipleship and follow-up January 19-24, and the Lake Village Baptist Church team constructed the roofs January 28-February 8th.

Another evangelism team to worked in Las Cascias subdivision of Danli in 2008. Pray for individuals who have a heart to do personal evangelism and work alongside pastors and church leaders at our evangelism workshops.

In January-February 2009, we completed a home for the pastor at Zapotillo, and constructed a new education building for the the mother church of these missions, Alpha and Omega Baptist Church in Danli. A door-to-door evangelism team from the U. S. also worked for a week in February.

The Lord has laid the burden for another medical dental evangelism team to serve in Zapotillo in 2010. Pray for personnel, resources and funding for this team and an evangelism team to follow-up on the decisions made with the medical team. Pray that the Holy Spirit will go before us and prepare the hearts of people to respond to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

There is no telling what the Lord will choose to do through us when we are obedient and available!

What would you do for Christ if you knew you could not fail?

What you can do

Partnership missions gives you an opportunity to become personally involved in what God is doing in world missions.

  • Pray daily for the work in Honduras.
  • Pastor and Church Leadership Training Ministry in Honduras.
  • Pray for three evangelism saturation teams to do door-to-door evangelism and rallies at night.
  • We have prepared one-day Evangelism Workshops for churches in Latin America.  These are patterned after the personal evangelism course we teach pastors and church leaders, but are shorter.  This course has proven to be very practical and effective in personal evangelism. It was first used in Ecuador and Honduras.  The vision for training rural pastors began with this course in mind while serving as a missionary in Honduras.
  • Juan Alberto Herrera Ministry Alberto has faithfully served 18 years as a contract worker with mission teams. We agree with him that it is God’s will for him to serve as a full-time evangelist and pastor.  Juan pastors a Honduran Baptist Convention church in Danli. He is our Director for Pastor and Church Leadership Training in Honduras.

Juan Alberto Herrera is an evangelist and pastor of Alpha and Omega Baptist Church.
